Flat-out no-go.įallout gives the message “Error initializing video mode 640 x 480.” The Wine DB entry suggests using winecfg to setup Fallout to run in Windows 98 mode, but Steam seems not to like that much at all. Because of this, Deus Ex is only marginally playable. Even after I got the game working, it was far too dark and I couldn’t adjust the gamma (because of the windowed graphics, I assume). Look for the WindowedViewport and StartupFullscreen settings. I was able to get Deus Ex to run, although I had to set the windowed mode and resolution by editing deus ex/System/DeusEx.ini. However, I was able to navigate to Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/the witcher enhanced edition/directx and run DXSETUP.exe from that directory directly (using Wine of course).Ī few times I’ve managed to get through the menus to start a new game, but The Witcher seems to crash as soon as it is time to render the game world. I also tried running winetricks to install DirectX 9 and it gives me a cryptic error message. The DirectX 9 install step in particular is bothersome. The Witcher doesn’t seem to like having to run its first time setup. For tips on running Guild Wars with Wine, check out the Wine DB entry and the Guild Wars Wiki page. The windowed version is small (800×600?) and I can’t figure out how to resize it. One annoyance is that the video resolution setting only offers two options: windowed and full-screen. This game is known to run well on Wine and I found it not hard at all to get working. The Dock can be configured to auto-hide, which is a satisfactory work-around. One small issue which is common to all of the games that I’ve run with Wine on Mac OS X so far is that the “fullscreen” mode still renders to the desktop, such that the menu bar at the top and the Dock at the bottom of the screen will still render. I am very satisfied with how Wine + Steam handles this one. I played Torchlight for a few minutes and it ran more or less flawlessly. Check out the Wine DB entry about Steam for some tips. Running the Steam installer on Wine was pretty easy. This is done using the command “port upgrade –force-variants +universal”. Because I’m running Snow Leopard, I did find that I had to install the +universal variant of Wine’s dependency packages. I am using the wine-devel package to run the latest version of Wine, which is 1.1.35. If you’re looking to do this sort of thing yourself, I recommend getting acquainted with MacPorts. Now that my iMac has a shiny new 1.5 TB hard drive, and a pretty decent GeForce 8800 GPU, it’s a good time to experiment with running games on Wine, particularly via Steam.
